To a Narrow Slice of Life

Exactly a year ago from this date, a friend of mine showed me a very awesome idea. The idea consisted a taking a picture at 8:36pm every single day for an entire year. It's a restrictive project compared to the conventional "picture a day" project, in the sense that I don't get to choose what picture to take. This will not only serve a way to remember the year, but this could possibly help me understand what's truly important in my life. People will often say that their whole lives flashed before their eyes after they experienced a traumatic event. This sounds a bit morbid, but this idea really captured me. All these thoughts crossed my mind as I walked home from their place. Without thinking, I took my phone out to call another friend for some KingPin, and what do you know, it was 8:34pm. And thus it began.

So now that I'm done, what's truly important, you ask? Well if you look at the album, my computer is what's truly important. This MacBook has gotten more screen time than any other person in this album, it's a little depressing. Seriously, 8:36pm cannot be a worse time to represent your day. I know this sound like an excuse, but there have been many days where I've done something really cool and productive, and the moment I get back and sit down, my phone alarm goes off telling me to take a picture, alone, with my computer. But to remedy this, I've given a description to each photo of what exactly I accomplished and learned. I guess to give a more serious answer: my 8:36pm slice of life may not always seem very interesting, but the thoughts behind each photo is what has truly given it meaning.

Here are some of the dates that have been pretty special to me. The actual captions from the album have been omitted (too long). Instead, I included a short description. Enjoy.

3/22/10: Death Valley Trip
EPIC trip with some of my closest friends. 4 second long exposure shot of our camp site at Mesquite Springs. Can you believe this is 8:36pm? Pitch Black. Brilliant Stars. Good Life.

5/27/10: Dessert Potluck with Toga Family
These are the types of nights that really define a summer break. It really comes to show the cohesiveness of our group, even after a year of college. The day got exponentially better when we had the opportunity to pick up Jason at the airport. Not to brag or anything, but the chocolate covered strawberries that Jeff and I made definitely stole the show. Pshh brownies? Weaksauce.

6/29/10: PIXAR STUDIOS
Peter. This day was a dream come true for me. Not only did I get to visit the birthplace of my favorite movies, but a special 3D screening--at their theater--of THE MOVIE I have been OBSESSED with since release? Thank you.

8/12/10: Last day with Ali
The day I got to spend quality time with my roommate. The day I sprinted from Frat Row to BART in 10min with my luggage. The day all the black people sitting around me started dancing on the train, just from one ringtone. The day I got to meet up with old friends. The day of the Perseids Meteor Shower. The day we went to Skyline. And finally, the day that epitomizes this quote: "Let the stars misalign and dictate other lives. We're too busy making our own light"

9/25/10: Tahoe Trip with Suitcase
Attempted corn maze, DREAM TEAM car ride, cabin at Lake Tahoe, can I ask for anything more? And yeah, shit went down that night.

11/24/10: McDonalds with Jeff
What better way than to discuss philosophical ideas over the highly anticipated McRib for 4 hours

12/1/10: Hooters with Abe and Conner
Spontaneous trip to Hooters in Dublin. My first time going, but frankly, service was disappointing (in many levels ). But the wings were great!

12/24/10 Christmas Eve + Will's Birthday
Family got together to celebrate Will's birthday. Awesome feast, awesome cake. Also a day where something very special happened--you know what I'm talking about. Anyone see something missing in this picture?

12/31/10 - New Years Party
The day a Chubby Bunny contest leads to an epic failure. Can I just say I love these people? And they have really shaped me to what I am today? Damn right I can.

1/7/2011: Roppongi Hills with Hiro
An aesthetic view of Mt.Fuji with a sunset overlooking Tokyo? Now that's Japan. I feel like this could really be some poster image for a business fraternity--you are too awesome Hiro

1/14/11: Last day in Japan
飲み屋with Tak, Morichan, and Yuki. I honestly could not ask for a better way to finish my trip. Had the opportunity to hang out with Tak for almost the entire day, and got to have an AMAZING time with friends I have not seen in 6 years! Great friends before, still great friends now. Great feeling.

2/8/11: Bento with Mom at SF ($15 bento!)
My mom would always joke around with me during middle school: "Jamie, if you get into Berkeley, we can have tea together on tuesday nights!". My mom commuted every Tuesday to SF to teach Urasenkei Tea. She wanted me get into Cal not because of its prestige and quality education, but because it would be nice to have tea with me on Tuesday nights. I would always tell her to stop getting her hopes up-- Berkeley was out of my league. I guess all that hard work payed off. This little dream finally materialized today. Almost two years in, we finally had our first dinner. I've been a little down that day, but this made up for it, a thousand times over.

2/24/11: Studying with Rousseau
Spent the rainy night studying for an EE midterm. Sometimes it's the small things that create those lasting impressions, and this day is one of them. Honestly, this guy is going to change the world. I'm so glad I know him.

3/12/11: Vik's Chaat Corner with Ninad, Matt, and Austin
Another day filled fine food and inebriation with the greatest of friends. I hope to spend my limited Berkeley days like this every day. AND HOLYSHIT THIS INDIAN PLACE IS PRETTY GOOD!
