To a Virtual Reality

Congratulations to SpaceX. Who successfully attached to the International Space Station in their CRS-1 Cargo Resupply Mission.

Watching all this on the YouTube stream, it dawned on me: the fact is...most of our perceptions are virtual. Most people have never seen an actual launch, most people have never seen a rocket or an astronaut. We read papers, watch television and movies, then listen to the reverberation of pundits and absorb the virtual as reality.

I think we need to step back and look around us and recognize the immediate, the familiar, the real. Recreating images of images is a parlour trick. Recognizing the significance of the world that's at our fingertips requires acceptance of our limitations and exploration of what we perceive as the mundane.
