To a Broken See-Saw
Rachel, I have no idea if this a phase or something, but the more I invest into politics, I keep leaning left. Honestly, the republican platform and FOX are just so..oppressive and backwards its seriously disturbing me. In no way do I mean to make this blog political, but I just have to say stuff right now. I'm gonna try to be as rational as I can..here goes my rant:
~~
Okay, many families including the one I am in right now, pay to live, to eat, for an education, car payments, phone bills, gas, electricity and many other services that don't CREATE jobs like the GOP love to regurgitate--but they MAINTAIN jobs because we as a consumer supply the demand. I don't get it, why should my health be considered a commodity to be profited from? And you love to recite "scary" words like socialism, communism, and other "-isms" to describe people who want their government to help them. You scream about national debt when you guys want to go wage wars to expand your power. You have no problem with it when our economy is draining like it was going out of style. For being a nation based on the idea of Freedom of Values, it seems that in our current year, the only Freedom and Values are being represented are those for Americas Corporations and invisible billionaires behind the scenes.
And FOX news, you guys are devious bastards. I have to admit, you guys are ridiculously effective at getting exactly what you want. You've thrown away all sense of journalistic pride, and basically manipulate political news to your liking. You horribly take things out context, you mislabel politicians, you fear monger with sweeping generalizations, sometimes you even edit footage! What scares me--deep to my core--is the fact that you guys are the most watched news network. These viewers simply CANNOT get past your rhetoric that you've mastered over the years. It's astonishing how you got the entire nation to question, "What the fuck has Obama done so far?" Or how you convince people who make $10k/year that Universal Health Care is bad. It's because they want FREEDOM to not have health insurance...really? REALLY?
And some of the GOP political figures..it seems to me that they are more obsessed with looking/sounding like revolutionaries than actually becoming educated and competent enough to fully understand the positions they support. (*cough* Bill O'Rielly *cough* Sarah Palin *cough* TeaParty Leaders). This reminds me of one of my favorite events during the last presidential campaign. When Obama was addressing a private audience and remarked on how Republicans have held many rural districts so tightly just by riling up fears concerning gun right and persecution of christianity, when those same poor rural people should realize the Republican pro big business policies have left many of those areas more destitute.
And If anyone mentions the trickle down theory ONE MORE TIME, I am seriously going to lose it.
Tax breaks for the rich are you KIDDING ME? I completely agree that there are a few in the top 5% worked their share and can legitimately say they deserve the money. But seriously, cut the crap guys. You don't earn your money buy making and selling good products for happy people to buy..(which happens to be the cornerstone of Capitalism). You earn your money by making and selling cheap crap, lying about its quality through advertising, influencing law, cheating taxes, and paying your employees as little as possible.
I think the problem is the illusion that we live in a meritocracy with extensive social mobility. It's not like that. In fact, its naive to think people begin on equal footing. First off, America is the place for opportunity, hands down. It's possible for anyone to become insanely rich, but that doesn't mean that all people have an equal opportunity to do so. A friend of mine once said something like this: "The black daughter of illiterate immigrant parents living in an inner city ghetto ravaged by crime and pollution is no more born with equal opportunity to become President compared to George W. Bush than I was born with equal opportunity to dunk compared to Shaquille O'Neil".
Poor people don't stay poor because they're lazy (though this certainly could be a reason for some individuals), they stay poor because they lack opportunity and/or have bad luck. To punish people for things that are beyond their control and thus reward yourself for your good fortune is just callous.
If you would stop waging class war against your own people, making it harder and harder for others to survive, instead of granting companies unregulated power with no absolutely no transparency, maybe--juust maybe--our country might be able to achieve your main talking point: "Peace." But if you continue to socioeconomically divide your people through greed driven policies, then you will never achieve any semblance of balance or peace.
